The Arab Commission for Human Rights (ACHR) denounced the decision by the French Consulate in Cairo to deny ikhwanweb editor Khaled Hamza a visa to attend the ACHR meeting in Paris marking the 60th anniversary of the international declaration of human rights. Hamza, chief editor of the Muslim Brotherhood official English website and an honorary member of the ACHR, received an official invitation to attend the conference and submitted all required documents as instructed by the consulate office in Cairo, which refused to comment on its arbitrary decision.
Hamza stated to Ikhwanweb that he was humiliated and treated unprofessionally during his visa interview. He complained that the clerk at the visa section discriminated against him using "improper language" referring to his work as a human rights activist and member of the Egyptian opposition.
Hythem Mann"a, spokesperson of the ACHR in Paris, expressed his disappointment and dismay at the French Consulate"s decision. Mr. Manna"a stated that he will head on Monday to the office of the French Foreign Minister to inquire about the reasons that led to the rejection of Hamza"s request to enter France, which stated "undermines France"s reputation"
The ACHR granted Hamza an honorary membership last year for his efforts and contributions as staunch defender of human rights in Egypt.
