Mahmoud El-Khodeiry, founder of "Egyptians for Elections Characterized by Freedom and Integrity" organization which prepared the bill on political rights stated that the bill which was presented to People's Assembly Speaker Fathi Sorour must be discussed and approved as it is an appropriate substitute for the present law which is stalling political rights in Egypt "More than 100 MPs who attended the conference have strongly supported the new law announced today since it protects people's rights defending their freedom of opinion and expression," El-Khodeiry said. El-Khudairi emphasized that the bill supports democracy in Egypt and avoids the shortcomings of the current law, stressing that the law's effectiveness will not succeed unless it wins popular support defending it against the NDP's MPs, who are only interested in their personal interests. "The bill represents a new transparency desired by the people and is welcomed by real MPs who wish to form a strong People's Assembly whose members are elected in free elections"
Dr. Hamdi Hassan, Assistant Secretary-General of the Muslim Brotherhood Parliamentary bloc, ascertained that successful coordination for the first time has taken place between national powers and 100 opposition and independent MPs who signed the bill He stated that the law provides citizens freedom to participate in elections without exception allowing people to choose their leaders and representatives with impartiality and without restriction
MP Zahran disclosed that some of the articles of the drafted law provided guaranteed protection of Egyptians' rights, nixed rigging and inheritance of power emphasizing that the ballot box is the criterion
George Ishaq, Kefaya's former coordinator and member of "Egyptians for Free and Fair Elections", said submitting the law to public voting and parliamentary approval is in fact a real achievement especially as political and parliamentary life has been stagnant for years. Isaac called on the PA Speaker to accept the law allowing its debate. MP independent Alaa Abdel-Moneim concluded maintaining that "The bill will put everyone in place", noting that in the event of the failure of passing the bill by the NDP majority, escalation will take place. |
