Engineer Khayrat El-Shater, Deputy Chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood, affirmed that the "development" called for in the Brotherhood is a must and a task that should be fulfilled due to the special phase currently experienced by the group in particular, and throughout Egypt in general. He also pointed that the development of the Brotherhood action would require changing the culture of the Muslim Brothers regarding dealing and interacting with "the others". He said during a conference on "Muslim Brotherhood and Development" organized by the Brotherhood of Damietta, on Friday: "The process of development would be concerned with the variables and not the constants", revealing the new partitions created the group. He stressed "the need to revise our methods, our goals and objectives, in order to fit with the new phase". El-Shater pointed out that "Mubarak's regime has led a war without mercy against the Brotherhood, especially after the success of the Islamic action in Algeria" "That regime used to target various ranks whithin the Brotherhood, whether from the top leaders or the ordinary individuals; with the aim of spreading the greatest level of fear and intimidation among all sectors of the Brotherhood community", he said. El-Shater pointed out that the group has three main tasks in the current period, namely: to contribute to building an Islamic renaissance in the nation based on Islamic reference, to maintain, protect and preserve the revolution, and the development of the Muslim Brotherhood's action so as to contribute to the accomplishment of the two preceding goals. With regard to the Islamic point of reference which the MB advocates, the Deputy Brotherhood Chairman said: "The nation needs the Islamic reference in order to advance, and we must learn from successful experiences in other countries such as the rise of Malaysia and Turkey - even if they do not represent fully the Islamic perspective for renaissance as understood and advocated by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt". El-Shater pointed out that there are desperate attempts to thwart the revolution; he said that there are ways that are being used to circumvent the demands of the revolution and abort the outcome of the referendum adopted by the Egyptian people. He also warned against external challenges by the forces that are trying to overthrow the revolution. However, he said: "Yet, through the rule of law and the orderly devolution of power, we will not allow stealing what we have achieved; bearing in mind that this goal (of preserving the revolutions and consolidating its gains) requires enormous effort and hard work." |
