New Sweep of Arrests Against MB in Monoufia Ahead of Municipalities

Egyptian state security forces launched a raid in the northern governorate of Monofiya on Sunday dawn, Jan, 6th, 2006, in which a number of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) members were arrested. During this raid, two MB members from Shibin Al Kawm were arrested, Diaa Ibrahim Eliwa- accountant in a computer company and Tamer Hamed Shousha- an English teacher. Both of them are still under detention at the state security premises in Shibin Al Kawm.
The security forces carry out this campaign as a part of the government"s crackdown against the Muslim Brotherhood to prevent it from fielding candidates for the coming Municipal elections.
Both detainees, taken from their homes at 2.30AM, were taken to the state security premises a few days after raiding and searching bookstores and printing houses in Monofiya and after disheveling the contents of these bookstores that included licensed books. These forces arrested owners of some bookstores including Mohamed Atwa and took him to the state security premises and issuing complaints of artistic compilations in order to close such sources of living for these people.
