The Muslim Brotherhood held on Saturday its first public internal election since the ousting of Mubarak, which illustrated the group’s insistence on transparency and democracy as three new members were voted in to the Excutive Bureau to replace Dr. Mohamed Morsy, Dr. Essam el Erian and Dr. Saad Katatny who joined the leadership of the newly found Freedom and Justice Party. The election came during the annual Ramadan Iftar, which the MB organizes every year during Ramadan.

MB chairman Dr. Mohamed Badie stressed during his speech at the Iftar that the unprecedented open elections held with the media presence symbolises the freedom that Egypt now lives in, thanks to the January 25 Revolution.

Saturday's vote elected three new members namely Abd El-Azim Abou Seif, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim and Dr. Hossam Abu Bakr to the group's executive board.

The historical move highlights a clear shift from the past, when the Brotherhood was barred from public politics and its members and finances were targets of continued security crackdowns.

The event was extensively covered by several media outlets including Associated Press, CNN, AlHurra, AlArabiya Aljazeera and others were present to witness more than 100 members of the group's policy casting ballots in transparent boxes
